PCT residency, Farnham Maltings 2011

Kristin Fredricksson will use the Puppet Centre Trust residency to explore mishmashing stop motion animation of humans, puppets and objects in live performance. Inspiration comes from cinefilms of naked 70s babies, Muybridge and Shiva.

In preparation for our pitch at 'house' in Brighton on 9 May, a first exciting day of R & D took place on 25 April 2011 at Queen Mary with XXXX and Helen Mugridge. (Yes, it was a bank holiday; we had to use smiles to get in to the building.) We used a cinefilm of me and my sisters playing in the garden c.1975, and, using istopmotion, made a mix of us performing the babies' moves, and the babies themselves.

Things we liked/questions we asked:-
-how much movement there is in ONE second
-being AWARE of this
-the way frame by frame film mimics the way our brains work with our eyes - we don't see fluidly
-is 25 the most shifts in attention our brain can manage in 1 second?
-Shiva-like multi-fixed images representing time passing
-fun - the look - Michael Clark
-the parent's eye, the magnetism of the camera
more to come...

Pitch, house platform 9 May 2011, Brighton Festival

I presented the very beginnings of a new show provisionally entitled 'Cooking Ghosts & Children' to an audience of promoters and punters. I showed some of the stop motion images from the day of filming and some other images of bulls I've filmed.
A desire; to make a bull to be on stage in this show.
An idea; to do the stop motion game with the bull movement.

The following was handed out to those interested in following the progress of the project:-

What can happen in one second? A child smiles, an idea orgasms, a popcorn pops, a sperm penetrates, a bull stands in the sun, a gun fires... We have at least 25 arms. Using 70s cinefilm footage of babies playing naked in the garden, stop motion animation, experimental camping, cooking and Shiva, this is a trip into the depths of a second.

This show will explore baby and bull movement, masculine and feminine, and what happens when we become aware of each instant.

On stage there will be three female performers, especially created objects including a bull, an accordion, stop motion video, mess and fun. It will be sensational. A physical, moving and delightful show about the thrill of living.

Beady Eye was founded in 2009 and toured the critically acclaimed Everything Must Go 2009-10 in the UK & Germany including a two week run at the Barbican in London and the Ruhrfestspiele in Germany. The show won a Total Theatre Award and the Arches Brick Award. Artistic Director, Kristin Fredricksson, worked as performer, director and puppet maker in France, Japan and Portugal for 12 years before returning to the UK in 2008.

Synopsis
An exploration of a father by a daughter using cinefilm, clowning, dance, puppetyr and hurdling. It is reality bordering on fiction; an athletic-puppetic meditation on love, loss, memory and play. Dad trains for the Olympics by day and drags up to the nines by night. His photos ans Super 8s inhabit the scene and reveal the man. Reality, age and obsession set in. His money-saving schemes become increasingly elaborate, from the secrets of free water to newspaper-stealing shoes. But eventually everything must go.
